2012 Annual Pastor’s report

Download 2012 Pastor’s Report [DOC] My first annual meeting at Northern Light was two Januarys ago. A few days after we met, I spoke with a member of a neighboring congregation who was attending a meeting elsewhere in our building at the same time as our Annual Meeting in the Fellowship Hall. She told me she heard laughter and clapping emanating from the Fellowship Hall and was surprised. She said that she had never heard of anyone having fun at a church meeting. Three years later, we are still having fun! Church life is not all fun and games, of […]

Native Ministries Meeting January 27 after Worship

Native Ministries has long been one of the priorities of Northern Light. We are blessed with the music of the Tlingit Gospel Singers who sing not only at our church, but at memorial services and community gatherings in Juneau and elsewhere in Southeast. Many of our members are or have been leaders in the Alaska Native Sisterhood, Sealaska, and other Native organizations, as well as serving as cultural educators in the school and community. Several years ago, the Rev. Mary Ann Warden served as our Associate Minister with a focus in Native Ministries, and Tlingit Elder, the late Rev. Dr. […]

Youth Corner, January 2013

Greetings and Happy New Year, The DNA (Douglas, Northern Light and Aldersgate) Youth Group had a packed holiday season. We checked out the first installment of Tolkien’s epic, The Hobbit; we sauntered joyfully through the streets of Douglas singing (and sometimes shouting) holiday carols; and we  gathered for an all night lock-in at Northern Light. Lots of fun and lots of fellowship! As we transition out of the Advent season and look toward Epiphany and Easter, we will start to ask deeper questions about what it means to be in relationship to each other and to “others.” What does it […]

The first Sunday in Advent, 12-02-12 All Her Children [DOC] Sermon December 2, 2012 All Her Children Phil Campbell, Northern Light United Church Text: Luke 1: 26-31, 46-55 26In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” 29But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. 30The […]

Sometimes We Have to Wait

The season of Advent elevates waiting from an unwanted byproduct of contemporary existence to a spiritual discipline that provides a transformed way to encounter life. Living and Growing While We Wait Living and growing: While we wait By Phil Campbell Northern Light United Church I grew up with Alvin and the Chipmunks. I’m not particularly happy about this; I would prefer not to have Alvin’s high pitched voice rattling around in my head as Christmas approaches. I do admit, however, to having identified with the sentiment expressed in the Chipmunk’s Christmas song: “We can hardly stand to wait. Please Christmas, […]

Phil’s Thoughts: December 2012

Advent is the time of year on the Christian Calendar when we get ready for the coming of God’s Messiah. The emphasis is not on the arrival itself, but on all the steps necessary to make ready for it. Thus, on December 2 we will prepare the church by hanging the greens and putting up the Christmas trees. Children and families will prepare that day by making Advent crafts they can make use of in their homes. Preparation doesn’t stop there. Our Sunday School classes are preparing the Heifer Project Living Gift Market that will take place December 9. Getting […]

Living and growing: Wanting to want

When I was in the third grade I memorized the Twenty-third Psalm. Psalm 23 consistently ranks at or near the top of polls of favorite Bible passages. Known as the “funeral psalm” because of its frequent reading at funerals and memorial services, it contains some of the best known phrases in scripture. “The Lord is My Shepherd. I shall not want…” The words of Psalm 23 have brought comfort to countless mourners in their time of need, and for this I am grateful. But they are also words that in their original context speak more to the possibility of living […]
