Youth Corner, October 2013

Published October 22, 2013 by ChristinaMaddox in Newsletter Articles, Youth ministry

Hello and many thanks for the warm welcome to the communities of Juneau and Douglas! I have enjoyed meeting the middle school and high school youth, as well as the Northern Light congregation where I had the opportunity to worship with you all.

DNA (Douglas, Northern Light, Aldersgate) kicked off with a BBQ cookout on Sunday, September 15 where we shared a meal and some fun as we got to know each other. 15 young people attended as well as parents and families of the congregations in the cooperative. DNA also met on Sunday, September 22 at Northern Light, where we shared a meal, a game of Sasquatch, our favorite music and how it impacts our lives. We also engaged in a social justice activity writing letters of love and encouragement to young people, ages 13-24, who are in need of support, through the Trevor Project and moreloveletters.com. On September 29, we played games at Douglas, shared a meal, discussed our values, created a covenant of radical hospitality, and learned about the child labor that goes into our favorite chocolate treats. We wrote to the chocolate companies who get their cocoa beans from these fields in Ghana and the Ivory Coast. Special thanks to Mike Barnhill and John Doogan for cooking, and Alisha Saulnier and Nancy Seamount for their presence with DNA! Also, welcome to the awesome individuals checking DNA out for the first time!

In DNA, we will be looking at how we can bring intention to every part of our lives—why we choose to listen to our favorite music, how we come to our relationships, and how we participate in the world. Each Sunday, we will share a meal, play games, do some centering, discuss a particular topic, and put our love into action through a social justice project.

There are some additional opportunities to volunteer in addition to coming to youth group every Sunday evening from 5:30-7:00 pm. On Saturday, October 19, DNA is volunteering at Glory Hole where we will cook and serve meals to those in need of a meal that day. Also, on Sunday, October 27, it is Youth Sunday at Aldersgate. DNA will lead worship at 11 AM. Those who are able and desire to lead can sign up at our regular youth gatherings on Sunday nights.
Well, that’s all for now! I’m looking forward to sharing this next year with all of you!!

Much love and peace
