Youth corner, Feburary 2013

Greetings!
I am happy to report a fantastic result of the DNA Youth Group’s overnight lock-in and PET Fundraiser: on December 30: the youth raised close to $700 while riding the PET device around the NLUC fellowship hall for TWELVE consecutive hours. This means we can send two PET devices with the Alaska delegation to Guatemala this summer. Many thanks to those who pledged money to support the fundraiser! If you have pledged but not sent in your total amount, please contact me ASAP.

Another update is the successful Alaska UMC Youth Mission Immersion weekend that took place between January 18 and 20. Three of the DNA Youth Group members attended, joining close to 50 other Alaska youth in acts of service, fellowship, and worship. The event was a real success, and the goal is to
make it an annual event.

An exciting addition to Eagle River United Methodist Camp’s programming is the March 1-3 Winter Retreat for 5th-8th graders. Young people throughout Southeast (and elsewhere) are invited. This year, the theme is Water & Good Fruit, which will explore Lenten subjects through hands-on, group-oriented environmental art projects and an outdoor exploration led by the SAGA Outdoor Education team. The weekend promises to be an excellent opportunity to introduce youth to the wonder of God’s Creation while living in community.

I would like to offer a special invitation to 5th graders, many of whom may be unfamiliar with what it feels like to spend a weekend away from home. A short weekend camp can be a good way to practice some independence, form new friendships, and begin the transition into Middle School life. Similarly, for
our 8th grade friends, we hope you will consider this camp as an opportunity to reflect on the transition from Middle School to High School. And for all ages, we hope to make this an engaging and unforgettable weekend of fun, fellowship, and learning. If anyone knows a 5th-8th grader who wants to participate in camp, please let me know! The cost is $80.00, but no one will be turned away because of inability to pay. Early Bird registration is
February 11. Space is limited, so register ASAP!

Lastly, if you love working with middle school folks and love being outdoors, this retreat could be your chance to serve as a counselor (over 18) or a counselor-in-training (14-18). Contact me if you want to serve that weekend!

Peace,
Allyn
