Youth Corner, January 2013
Greetings and Happy New Year,
The DNA (Douglas, Northern Light and Aldersgate) Youth Group had a packed holiday season. We checked out the first installment of Tolkien’s epic, The Hobbit; we sauntered joyfully through the streets of Douglas singing (and sometimes shouting) holiday carols; and we gathered for an all night lock-in at Northern Light. Lots of fun and lots of fellowship!
As we transition out of the Advent season and look toward Epiphany and Easter, we will start to ask deeper questions about what it means to be in relationship to each other and to “others.” What does it mean to be in a community? What does it mean to serve others? What does it mean to speak truth to power? As Christian folk, what are we called to do when we see the “isms” in society (racism, classism, sexism, etc.) and other injustices?
Some of our youth will have the opportunity to explore these questions when they participate in the 2013 Youth Mission Immersion in Anchorage from January 18 through 20. Five youth and I will participate in a weekend worth of service projects alongside youth from all over Alaska. If you know of a 6th-12th grader who would still like to participate, registration is open until January 13 (travel scholarships, however, are no longer available).
Other youth have the opportunity to gather for a March 1 through 3 Winter Retreat at the Eagle River United Methodist Camp. This camp is for 5th through 8th graders, but older youth (9th-12th) have the opportunity to serve as counselors-in-training. And adults have an opportunity to serve as Counselors. Registration forms are available at the church, or you could email me. Please contact me if you want to get involved.
Lastly, please keep an eye on the rotation of where youth will meet each Sunday. I had to move some things around for the second semester because of times I will be away and to ensure some balance in where we meet. Thanks for your attentiveness, your support, and your investment in the lives of young people here in Juneau and Douglas.
Blessings of peace for a New Year,
