Phil’s Thoughts, February 2016

Falling on March 27, Easter is early this year (the earliest it can be is March 22), and this means Lent, the 40 day season of preparation before Easter, begins February 10 (Ash Wednesday)! As has been our church’s tradition, we will hold a Wednesday 6:30 p.m. study during Lent. We begin on the 10th with a brief Ash Wednesday worship service followed by our first study session. This year, our study guide will be Brian McLaren’s book, A New Kind of Christianity: Ten Questions that are Transforming the Faith. McLaren is a former pastor and prolific author. His work […]

Report from the UMC Annual Conference, Part II – But wait…aren’t we already a Welcoming Congregation?

Our tag line is “No matter who you are, no matter where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.” Doesn’t that say it all? Who doesn’t feel welcomed? Well, as a heterosexual, Alaskan-born, English-speaking, able-bodied, Master’s degree graduate, middle-class, married white woman who has deep family history in Northern Light, I’m definitely the wrong person to ask. All the stars of privilege are aligned for me (except perhaps arguably my female gender). There are no roadblocks between myself and any place of worship, especially in regards to my sexual orientation or gender identity. In Phil’s article in the […]

Phil’s Thoughts, August 2015

There is a Peanuts comic strip that features the character Linus who is sighing. His big sister Lucy criticizes him for wasting time with sighing, declaring that sighing has no value. Linus responds, “‘When we do not know how to pray as we ought, the Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words.’ Romans 8: 26.” The subsequent frame reveals Lucy with a big frown, followed by her conclusion, “I don’t know whether to slug him or to go back to Sunday School!” I am frequently recall this cartoon for a host of reasons, especially as we anticipate returning to […]

Lay Leader Report from the Alaska United Methodist Annual Conference June 4-6

As your lay representative to the United Methodist side of Northern Light, I attended Annual Conference in Anchorage at the beginning of June. Some quick points of mention are: Our wonderful Pastor Phil was awarded the Harry Degnan Evangelism Award! This was by nomination from our fellow Northern Light congregant members. A big point worth noting is that while membership is dropping in churches conference wide, Northern Light is steadily growing. Phil’s leadership has been instrumental in our growth and community presence. Northern Light has raised $6,473 in the three years of the Imagine No Malaria campaign! The School of […]

Phil’s Thoughts

One of the goals that emerged from last year’s congregation-wide Visioning Gathering is to “Continue to prioritize activities consistent with our desire to be a welcoming church that values, honors, and learns from diversity.” Among the actions steps identified toward this end is to “investigate becoming a ‘reconciling/more light congregation’ with more visible inclusion of LGBTQ persons.” “Reconciling” is a United Methodist designation, and “More Light” is a Presbyterian descriptor. Both name a commitment that a congregation makes explicitly to welcome gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, and queer persons into the full life, leadership, and ministry of the church. It means […]

Thanksgiving Complexities

by Phil Campbell Today is the final day of the Thirty Day Gratitude Challenge that executive trainer Jeff Packard created on FaceBook. Playing off Thanksgiving as a November holiday, the Gratitude Challenge is an invitation to express thanks each day of the month. In similar vein, my observances of Thanksgiving often include an opportunity for dinner guests to share what they are thankful for. Life is a gift and I don’t think we can ever express gratitude too often, but I also confess that sometimes I have experienced these exercises as more perfunctory than profound. The gratitude challenge and its […]
